Aplasia of the frontal sinus is a relatively common phenomenon and may be accompanied with hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus, but combined aplasia or underde-velopment of the paranasal sinuses is unusual (1, 2).These developmental pathologies may be misdiagnosed as si-nusitis or neoplasm (2). Computerized Tomography (CT) is an excellent imaging technique that is used to map sinus anatomy (3). Here, we present a 23-years old male patient who has combined aplasia of sphenoid, frontal, and maxillary sinuses accompanied by ethnocide sinus hypo-plasia, which is the second reported case to our knowledge. Twenty three years old male patient presented with complaints of headache and nasal obstruction to the Oto-rhinolaryngology outpatient clinic. Axial and Coronal CT scans (5mm slice thickness) delineated lack of pneumati-zation in the frontal, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses and minimal pneumatization in the ethmoid cells eg. Total aplasia of the frontal, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses and hypoplasia of the ethmoid sinuses. (Figure 1) No other craniofacial anomaly was observed. He had no previous history of facial trauma, irradiation or systemic diseases affecting the skeletal system such as Paget's disease, osteopetrosis, or fibrous dysplasia. No other abnormality was found on clinical and laboratory examinations, including cystic fibrosis. The paranasal sinuses begin their development as an evagination of the mucosa from the nasal cavities during the third and fourth fetal months. They undergo major expansion after birth, along with the development of the facial cranium and teeth (1) The underdevelopment or aplasia of the paranasal sinuses is a rare phenomenon that refers mainly to the frontal (12%) and secondarily to the maxillary sinuses (5% and 6%). Agenesis of the sphenoid sinuses is extremely rare (4). The agenesis of the paranasal sinuses occurs more frequently in syndromes of craniosynostosis, osteodys-plasia (Melnick-Needles), as well as in cases of Down's syndrome (hypoplasia of the frontal sinus) (3). Developmental anomalies of paranasal sinuses in cystic fibrosis patients is significantly high compared to normal population (3). The developmental pathologic abnormalities may be misdiagnosed as sinusitis or neoplasm (4). The maxillary sinus is the first of the paranasal sinuses to develop in the human fetus and is present at birth. Development of the maxillary sinus may become arrested in children with recurrent chronic rhino sinusitis (4). For many authors there …

Investigating the Effect of Air Cavities of Sinuses on the Radiotherapy Dose Distribution Using Monte Carlo Method

Background: Considering that some vital organs exist in the head and neck region, the treatment of tumors in this area is a crucial task. The existence of air cavities, namely sinuses, disrupt the radiotherapy dose distribution. The study aims to analyze the effect of maxillary, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses on radiotherapy dose distribution by Monte Carlo method.Materials and Methods: ...

Sensitivity and Specifity of Plain X-Ray in Diagnosis of Acute Sinusitis

ABSTRACT With considering of high prevalence of sinusitis and variable imaging modalities in diagnosis of it, we decided to evaluate sensitivity and specifity of plain x-ray in diagnosis of acute sinusitis. In this researeh , CTscan and plain x-ray findings of 83 patients with suspected acute sinusitis (by otorhinolayrngologist) - with considering of ethical and economic notices - were compar...

Significance of CT and MR findings in sphenoid sinus disease.

Disorders of the paranasal sinuses, particularly the sphenoid sinus, can be associated with significant disorders of the optic and other cranial nerves. We examined 100 consecutive routine CT scans, 100 posterior fossa CT scans, and 100 MR scans to look for evidence of sinus disease, especially of the sphenoid sinus. The sphenoid sinus was abnormal in 7% of scans by all methods. Other sinuses w...

Paranasal sinus pathoses on cone beam computed tomography

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate paranasal sinus pathoses detected on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in an adult population. PATIENTS AND METHODS Three observers retrospectively inspected 353 consecutive CBCT scans obtained in a dentomaxillofacial radiology department for paranasal sinus pathoses. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to determine the pre...

Inter-Observer and Intra-Observer Variability In the Assessment of The Paranasal Sinuses Radiographs

The aims of this study are to determine the intra-observer and inter-observer agreement between the two radiologists when reporting the Waters view and 3 views series of the paranasal sinus radiographs. To also determine whether a single Waters view is adequate for diagnostic purpose of sinusitis. 90 sets of paranasal sinuses radiographs were reported by two radiologists independently. The resu...
